Yes. Lucky for him I did not know him, or any of his daughters until several years after it happened, he was behind bars, and his girls were getting counseling, and all that.

thats really sad... so the Amish can work on computers and such but can't have them in their houses,,right?? I went on a trip to PA (lancaster, gettysburg) I met an Amish Lady, and wow they are more modern than i thought. this might sound weird but If I had a choice to be Amish i would. lol

Yeah. Just like all other "denominations," or whatever, the amish have a bunch of differences too. The guys my brother work with used to have an office in their family's basement, internet and all, then moved a trailer house in behind the house and turned it into an office. There's also "New Order" and "Old Order" amish...like the NO amish would use tractors instead of purely horse-drawn equipment, etc. Most of the NO amish would still take a horse and buggy to church on Sundays, etc. Be my guest, but I think I'll pass! :)

Oh you want a buggy and you know it! :P LOL
Not even close. Amish are humans just like we are, they just choose to live a far different life than the rest of us. They are susceptible to all the same "human" problems we are.
:) Sure they do! Some might have just one cow for their family's milk, or they might have a dairy farm. Some don't have one at all. Does your friend's family milk them by hand, or do they have a vacuum pump? You should know if you shake hands with one of the people that milk them. Haha They'll crush your hand. :)

haha lol.  they started out by hand untill they got more cows. now they have a pump. when they first got a cow i tried to milk it and well it creeped me out,  The milk is so much better than store bought.
Since they have so much milk these days, they make cheese!

Ya they do! There's lots of Mennonite dairy farmers. We had an Amish colony near us and people never get it that Amish and Mennonite are NOT associated with each other! You caught onto the four forbiddens fast Grant! You know what I'm talking about. Last night my sister and some of my friends and I were discussing the way we had to dress. I don't want to put the Mennonites down, but you know what Beckah? there's more behind the scenes that what is seen. They are a friendly people why have amazing family values and morals, but some things get to far. Like Grant said about the man who raped his daughters. There are Mennonite men like that and they get away with it because no one knows what to really do about it.And like my friends were talking about last night, the frustration of having to wear sleeves that are past your elbows, even in summer. I like my arms free!!lol
I should link a video off you tube about the Amish...but I won't because it kinda pokes fun...I love it though!!

but I do live about an hour from a Headorite(spelling?) colony

We have a Hudorite (i have not idea how to spell it) colony near us too.
No we could NOT watch movies or TV! Right around the time we left the Mennonite church there were meetings with all the bishops about allowing internet. It was decided it could only be used for business purposes and you had to have someone who was connected to your computer and could see everything you did as your "accountability" partner. Confusing. Most people jsut chose a friend as their "accountability" person and then they could do what they wanted and no one told that they weren't using internet for business purposes!
I'm no longer a Mennonite in any way. Where I live there isn't the variety of Mennonites as there would be where Grant comes from. So when we left the M church we left it completely where he had the option to find one that was more workable.

According to my old church, NOOOOooooo, that's wicked! I honestly think both of them are usually just a waste of time, but I still get a kick out of a movie every now and then too(might go watch one with my buddies tonight). Haha yep, been there, done that, and got a bunch of t-shirts. LOL T-shirts were never a problem, but they were supposed to be plain, and have sleeves. Oh how I hate sleeves in the summer. Haha!
Yep, whole milk's quite a bit better, but it's so much different if you know where it comes from. LOL I just got done milking and feeding(with my boss) 91 milk cows, and feeding all the calves, heiffers, and dry cows, and everything's a muddy mess right now around here.
I believe it's Hutterite...they're a whole different bird entirely!
Clare, yep, mom and dad's church still have the accountability thing, but it's open for personal/business use. Oh, and...that's gotta be Amish Paradise by Weird Al. :)

Yes, it is Hutterite! I got fourth place in the spelling bee this weekend....out of five peeple. :D

We have a couple cows that we milk. We used to milk by hand, but then we got more cows and a machine. People sometimes are like "You have cows that you like...get milk from"
Yup. That's the point of a "Milking cow".

A friend of mine is sort of hooked on some of those "Amish Romance" novels in our church library, but I'm sure that they're nowhere close to the real thing. (Really, I think all romance books are just ...Fake. Counterfeit. Unreal. Fraudulent. False. Phoeny. You get my point)
I think it would be cool to live like the Amish for ...a week. I'm not quite sure I could handle it forever. Not after having lived this way for 17 years.

How did we get to milking cows and Amish and Hutterites and Mennonites and Milking Cows from "Dressing for church/dress codes" ?? :^)

Don't say the word "goat" around me. There were times I thought I was going to turn into one. feeding them milking them, saving them from getting trapped in tight places, de horning the kids. Aaah!!
I've never read the Amish romance, they're all cheesy just from reading the backs. Stupid. If you want interesting, slightly romance, but every historical read George McDonald's books. He's an excellent writer!
YOU hate sleeves Grant! You know what button up shirts are like with the cuff buttoned. Imagine wearing that all the time. I'd get a tan on my arms that didn't even reach to my elbow. Of course no one could even see that.

Grant and Clare...so you have to wear long sleeves in the summer?
I would never last! But maybe I could since our summers in north dakota arnt that hot..lol in the summer, I normally wear shorts and a T-shirt.

A homeschool family I know has milking goats too. o boy are they scary and hard to milk.

oh and Liz I think we got onto this subject because Grant said he went to a mennonite church...and I asked him questions about it..so yea. lol

Liz, Haha! Good question...Beckah started asking questions, and it's her thread, so I don't mind the major de-rail. :)
Clare/Beckah, yes I do hate sleeves! Thankfully my old church apparently wasn't as strict as yours, but shirts were supposed to at least have short sleeves. I never became a member there, and never intended to, so I've been wearing sleeveless t-shirts and shorts at work in the summer on days that I'm landscaping, but I have to wear a company t-shirt and pants at my other job(auto dealership). At least they're nice shirts.

now that we aren't Mennonites it's no big deal any more. I wear T shirts but mom has pretty strict rules about sleeveless shirts and we can NOT wear shorts or jeans for that matter. @ the M church though our dresses had to have sleeves that came past our elbows, no higher.
Just a minute Grant, you didn't become a member at your parent's church, so after you became a christian they didn't try making you start instruction class?? They made me wear a covering right after I became a christian tho dad wanted me to wear a veil. He had me wait before I started instruction class. And when I did I didn't agree with what was taught. Needless to say we left the church not long after. That big rabbit trail just to say, how did you get away with not joining their church? Even though I wasn't a member I HAD to dress like everyone. I did wear blue socks and refused to wear a belt. I made my statement!lol

Sure they did! My grandpa tried to convince me that it would be a good idea to join the church where my parents were members, etc., but I will not make a decision that I am not willing to make, or believe is right. I've got a pretty thick skull. :) Everyone learns fairly quickly after trying to make me do something, or make me feel bad for "being worldly" or whatever, that if I don't want to, or don't believe it's necessary, or scriptural, I won't do it, and I make no apology for who I am as long as I believe that I am doing my best to live as a Christian, and follow the laws of the Bible. Anyway, a couple years ago, I left that church.
After several of the older men in the church quit waving at me on the road when they obviously saw me, or looking away when I meet them, or just not talking to me anymore after I started wearing bill caps, or shorts, or right after I got my motorcycle, etc., I said I don't want any part of that. So, I left, and haven't regretted it once.

That's the way you have to be...thick skulled...to be able to take all that without breaking down. I'm usually stubborn but then suddenly I won't be able to take it anymore and I break down and do what everyone is trying to make me do. Good for you for not letting people's comments wear you down. I hate causing strife!
We never got rid of our three wheelers or dirt bikes and that didn't go over cool. We were told we had to sell our pontoon boat we inherited when my uncle died. Dad kicks himself to this day for selling it. It was free and the only boat we ever owned and our whole family could fit in!

My dad is the same way basically.  for a while i really hated it (because i'm not a girly girl at all....) but at about age 15/16 i realized that its not that he wants to torture me, its that he wants to see all of his children giving our best to God. dressing differently is one of the ways we can give our best to God.  i don't look down upon those who don't dress up-thats fine.

i'm guessing thats why your dad wants you to not wear jeans.  just think of dressing up as an opportunity to serve God.  if you went to see the president, i bet you wouldn't wear jeans!  so how important is God to you?
