ok, going back to the "wrong subject" , I guess this is for Clare and Grant: Dancing is like completely looked down upon in Amish/Mennonite/etc. churches, right? I mean, I like to go to Barn Dances (they are a blast), but there are people at our church (an E. Free Church) who wouldn't approve of us going to dances and such. I'm not quite sure where I'm going with this. :^) |

Nope no dancing of limits. huge trouble. we couldn't have any kind of instrument or listen to music. The kind of Mennonite Grant is though instruments of certain kinds are acceptable, though I think dancing is still a big no. We learned to really appreciate four part harmony and accapella!!! |

haha that's what I figured! If I was Amish and went dancing or something would that make me like "evil"? |

| why is dancing off limits?? I've never understood that one... King David danced in the streets (practically naked, for goodness' sake!) |

| That's a good point. I know the violin is sometimes considered evil because "it made people want to dance" but I don't know why dancing is off-limits |

well now you see just a few of the small reasons we left the Mennonite church. There were many other reasons to. Dancing was bad because if it was couple dancing you have to touch a guy (or girl) and it was inappropriate behavior. And you can't dance without music and music was a no. There were a lot of reasons for things we didn't agree with. Not that they were wrong but they were just things that didn't matter. Like music. I love my hip hop and rap, but i only started listening to it a year ago |

Wow, sound's like you're dad is really strict. My church is more suit and tie for guys, dresses for girls. But the new church that we're starting up in the fall (Island Christian Church in Holtsville Long Island) is going to be more smart casual (jeans, t-shirt with an open button down shirt for guys, jeans and nice top for girls) which is going to be so much easier for me to pick out an outfit for church.
As for dancing, we actually have a dance team as part of the worship team (check it out on youtube-> nbc doz) but if there's a wedding reception at church, there's no dancing (which is really sad because I would want dancing at my wedding reception).

You're right. Dancing is big no no. My parents' church finally just started allowing musical instruments except drums. Go figure. I think Clare hit it right on the head. Many of the mennonite/beachy/amish-mennonite churches have a totally hands-off policy for dating couples, etc., and dancing is just over the top! Guys hold hands with girls, put their arm around them, someone might trip and have to grab someone, etc. "It's just a risk that you can't take!" Oh, and yeah, dancing to accapella music just...doesn't work. LOL I really wish I had half a clue how to dance. I would love to be good at it, and I've always thought it'd be awesome to impress my wife and be able to dance together! |

| Amish-Mennonite. Like my old church was originally made up of former amish people that switched to mennonite, but not quite as "worldly" as some mennonites. My grandpa is a minister there, and my mom(his daughter) grew up amish, then they started that church. |

| See, we dance like they did in the Bible with the tambourine, flags, streamers, fans, scarves, etc. In the old testament there are many occasions where the young, virgin women would come out and praise and worship God with the tambourine and dance. David even said in Psalm 100 to worship the Lord with the timbrel and dance which is what we do. Here's a video from a camp we did with the young girls of the church. For the evenings of one week, they came and learned more about God as well as 2 songs. At the end of the week we show the parents what the girls have learned- this past summer the theme was creation and how God is so much bigger then we can comprehend. Many times we tend to make God smaller and asking Him to work around what we have planned. This was a week that we put God into perspective. One way was by looking at the world around us and wonderful things that God has made. We put us into perspective by imagining that earth was the size of a golf ball (as Louie Giglio did in the How Great is Our God passion tour a few years ago). If earth was the size of a golf ball, try and find you on that golf ball. Then taking that idea and sizing us up to the rest of God's creation by looking at various stars and galaxies in the known universe. |

| Wow.. I think I might die if my church was that strict (No offence at all to you guys!) My church is you wear jeans and sweatshirts and blouses. We actually hold dances in the gym at our church and all the kids go to homecomings and proms and other dances at school.. I guess if i grew up Amish/Mennonite I wouldnt have a problem with it. Idk.. lol again No offence at ALL to you guys!! I think it would be nice sometimes to be more conservative.. |

| I know, my friends and I are planning a dance party where we'll be playing both christian music (like After Edmund and the W's) as well as non christian music since there are christian songs to dance to but not many. I'm trying to get some of my friends from doz (daughters of zion, the dance ministry at church) to dress up like from the 50's and do a dance to The Devil Is Bad by the W's (since their a swing band from the 90's). I don't know what I would do if we didn't have doz at church since it's so much fun (especially during our camp with the girls of the church where we can do all sorts of crazy warm up dances to fun songs). |

"my" dancing is probably WAAAY different then all yours! I go to barn dances where they have a live band. There's a caller who teaches you how to do the dance, and then you do it with the music. There's square dances, line dances and circle dances. You really don't have to be a good dancer to go to these and they're totally awsome! (except most of the time the average age is about 55. ) |

artist for christ, that's a really cool dance/performance! I wish our church did more stuff like that! LOL@AllieRay Jeans and a t-shirt work for me anytime! I usually wear my nice wranglers, cowboy boots, and a long sleeved button down western shirt in the winter, short sleeved in summer. Wednesday nights it's jeans and a t-shirt! I'm guessing you would still have a problem with it. I did, and I left. There's way too much time wasted on "looking good," and not enough time spent fixing the problems that make people "look bad." Liz, that sounds like a blast!!! Dad used to love square dancing back in the day(Dad is Japanese, and was as far from being amish-mennonite as you can get. LOL) before he got married, etc. |
