Today as I was bending over in a flower bed pruning rose bushes, a thought came to mind. It startled me, because that doesn't happen very often! LOL Well, here it is. The age old practice of guys whistling at pretty girls on the street, on the sidewalk, at the county fair, etc... What do girls think of it now? I guess the new version is honking at girls because everyone's driving everywhere now. Does it make you feel flattered, and take it as a compliment, or does it make you feel like "exhibit A" that just got blue ribbon? I've done it jokingly to a couple of my friends that I know really really well, and they knew I was just being dumb, but I've never done it to a total stranger. Like I said, I was just curious. What do girls think when a guy whistles/honks at 'em? Post away! :)

hahaha well, im surprised Im the first to reply...
well, I've been honked at or whistled at, and if it's a guy friend just being silly, it's normally funny, and I either pretend that I'm flattered (like over dramatise it) or poke tongues at them, when it's a random, I normally think "MORON!" haha and think that they have no lives and are stupid... well thats just from my experience :P

Turn up the music
Turn it up loud
Take a few chances
Let it all out
'Cause you won't regret it
Lookin' back from where you have been
'Cause it's not who you knew
And it's not what you did
It's how you live

hahaha lots of interesting ideas come from gardening =P no I'm serious

I definitely feel like an item when guys whistle or honk or yell through the window (haha =) at me. It's not like they are noticing my great personality (ha) or how I was helping so-and-so (or trying to), they are noticing how I look.

That's never happened to me before, but if it did, I think I would feel more like a piece of meat then an actual person.

Thanks for the responses gals! I kinda suspected that that would be the response, but ya never know 'til ya ask, right? :) I think it's kinda funny though, because every once in a while if some of us guys are driving around in town at night in the summer, every once in a while a gaggle of girls in a car will go past and honk and smile and wave wildly, and it cracks me up! I usually just think, "Ahhh, crazy women these days! They must not have gotten a good look at us! LOL" Soooo yeah, pretty sure I won't do that then. :)

Adelynn - If I had a dollar for every tool I've "invented," or crazy thoughts I've come up with over the last 4 years of landscaping, I could probably retire. haha! And some days, I just don't think at all. :P

so, coming from a guys perspective, what are guys thinking when they do something like that to get our attention?

Um...I don't think they are. LOL I dunno...I guess it's just kinda like the dogs in the movie "UP" Here we are going about life and all of a sudden, "SQUIRREL!" Then we keep on truckin'. I've never done it myself, but if I would, I would actually mean it as a compliment. I think it's back to the whole guys are visual, girls are emotional type of deal. Guys see a pretty girl, and boom! I wanna talk to her, get her attention, say hi, maybe get a date, then maybe I'll like who she really is, "oh please please PLEASE be my prisoner!" LOL Am I right that girls pretty much go at it from the other direction and are more like... he's really kind, and courteous, he just helped that kid up after he fell off of his bike, aww he's nice to his sister, and, he's actually kinda cute!? The girls I know say they like it when a guy notices, and compliments them on a new dress, hairstyle, shoes, etc.I guess in my mind, whistling at a pretty girl would kinda fall into the same category almost. Instead of saying "hey, nice dress/shoes/boots/purse/whatever, it looks great great on you, I like it," it'd just be saying "hey, nice you! You look great on yourself, I like it." I dunno, maybe I'm just digging my own grave. Haha!

I LOVE the UP analogy. Even though I hate the movie. I had to read that to my brother. And he has invented many things while landscaping! All I wonder is if worms get claustrophobia...
you heard my view on being whistled at. Secretly I might be pleased but probably wouldn't take it as a compliment too much.
I might be weird (well I am but anyway) when I see I guy I notice his looks. Some guys you're like "wow what does she see in him!!" But looks are just an added bonus. If I see a young man ask a mom if he can hold her baby for her I'm gaping in awe and approval. If he mentions mission work I'm all ears. If he got mad and broke a cup and goes and buys a bunch to replace it, that's something. If you tell him he's dumb and he tells you you're sweet back, wow:) If he mentions he liked a certain shirt...or when you're doing something new that you're doing great keep it up...or "you know what, you got really cool colored eyes"...That's all stuff I like in a guy!! ( scary scary realization. all those situations were real live ones about a guy I know. uh oh)
Some girls I know were watching a movie and one actor had a really muscular physique and they were all like "whoa that guys hott" at the same moment I blurted loudly "Yuky!!" Don't get me wrong, I notice a good looking guy, and if I see a good looking guy I do kinda want to go talk to him. But looks can be empty and all the above scenarios matter more than looks...
Like I said...I could be very weird...:)

I think you're right, Grant, that girls are often notices what a guy does before thinking about going out with them. Though there are definitely exceptions, and I have to admit that I have a crush on Harry from SpiderMan 3, though that is more of a joke than anything real- I haven't even bothered to find out his real name, because it doesn't really matter.

I do notice the "hott" guy- I just don't pursue anything with it because that doesn't matter enough to me, I'm more interested in how a guy acts.

Yeah, during track practice we have to wear matching outfits with really short shorts, and we run along the sidewalks near my campus during rush hour. Every single day, we get numerous comments and beeps when we run past cars stopped at a red light. Every time I get a comment I kinda get mad. I immediately think, I am not an object, I am a living being that would like to be allowed to go on with my life without being honked at.

God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of POWER, of LOVE, and of SELF-DISCIPLINE. So do not be afraid to testify about our LORD.

not cool. it means the guy would be looking at my body and not me as a person.
although, i am human, so -for a millisecond- i might be flattered! :^)
I just contridicted myself didn't I. Oh well. It's been a long weekend.

A girl should be so lost in God that a guy has to go in Him in order to find her

I know I'm a tad late... But when a guy whistles or honks at me and my sis it's really awkward!!! Anyone else had the guys at the take-away windows check them out or stare at them; when your at a restaurant, the male staff are suddenly very polite and friendly (That happened this morning) yet, the guys at school treat you like trash. (I go to a Christian school but the guys treat me like rubbish!!!) This world is really weird!!!

Blessings,
Bubbles

Just adding my 2 cents:

While I've never had any guys whistle or honk at me- I'd still feel flattered if they did. :P
I love the movie UP! Haha it's so cute.
Grant, I would have to reiterate and say that I most definitely notice when a guy is nice to his sister or helps a kid back on his bike or something like that. I notice when I guy offers to help carry a child; I notice when he offers to help clean or take a load off some lady. Heck I notice when a guy totally goes out of his way to help. My respect and admiration goes WAY up. It is cute. I agree with ALL of what Clare says. :) Compliments are always welcome. :P haha
Just to add- if I see a guy working in a garden I'll be like 'wow! That is awesome.'
